Zhou Family Bursary Award

"Promising beneficiaries of The Business Times Budding Artists Fund (BT BAF) will have the opportunity to further develop their arts education through a new bursary award established by up-and-coming Chinese artist Zhou Su Yin and her family.
The Zhou Family has an illustrious involvement in the arts, notably their daughter Zhou Su Yin who had held one of the most successful art exhibitions at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in 2009 and was the youngest artist to ever exhibit at the site. The Zhou Family Bursary Award was established as a legacy of the Zhous’ support for the arts and their belief that no child should be denied the opportunity to fully develop their talents in the arts if they have a strong interest and commitment to acquire the art skills.
A maximum of 5 bursary awards valued at SGD$2,000 each will be given out every year for five years to talented BT BAF beneficiaries who have completed at least one year of study at The Little Arts Academy (LAA). This sum can be used towards specialist training, examination fees, agreed overseas performance opportunities and the purchase of arts resources such as musical instruments, attire, books and materials."
Here is an example of an arts related bursary award which I encountered recently.  Its encouraging to know that the above mentioned Zhou Family and The Business Times Budding Artist Fund are always on their toes to help those who are from lower socio-economic statuses to develop their talents.
Just in case you thought of applying, application has closed.  Contact Little Arts Academy for more information!
Let me know if there are other examples of such funds locally!

Real-World Training for Special Needs Youth (ST, 19 Dec '10, 33)

This article in The Sunday Times, mentions on-the-job training for special needs youth.  The article traces the success story of two social enterprise cafes (Joan Bowen Cafe & Professor Brawn Cafe), programmes by Delta Senior School (DSS) in tandem with Workforce Development Agency (WDA) spearheaded by Ministry of Education (MOE).

"Under the project, DSS, which takes in special needs students from the ages of 17 to 21, was paired with the WDA to offer the industry-recongnised Workforce Skills Qualification (WSQ) in areas like horticulture and landscaping, food and beverage, hotel and accommodation.  Similarly, another special needs school, Metta, which takes in students across a wider age range from 5 to 21, partnered the Institute of Technical Education to offer the ITE Skills Certification (ISC)."

With these "big players" in the game, things are looking up for those with special needs.  DSS has the backing of more than 40 companies in various industries supporting this initiative.

The next time you're out, take a look around and see.  Perhaps the cafe or restaurant you are sitting at might just be a similar social enterprise.  They do deserve a fulfilling career, just like anyone else.

Project Helping Hands

In this day and age where people are living longer, we have an aging population.  An increasing trend is that the elderly stay apart from the children.  The reasons for doing so can be an entire lengthy discourse in itself.  But the problem remains that these elderly often stay and die alone.  In some cases, no one realizes that they have passed on for several days.  Until the obvious signs start to appear to the neighbors.

"THE New Paper, Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Lions Befrienders have jointly launched Project Helping Hands, an initiative to help senior citizens live their golden years safely and with dignity.
It aims to raise at least $1 million by end of the year to support the project. The number of elderly aged above 60 and living on their own is projected to rise from 35,000 last year to 83,000 by 2030.
Ngee Ann Polytechnic devised a hardware for this project - a wireless sensor alert system that can be installed in an apartment.
It tracks the resident's movements and sends an SMS to a caregiver or volunteer if no motion is detected after a pre-set time - for example, if the resident remains motionless due to an injury or illness.
The system, which was developed, installed and maintained by the staff and students of Ngee Ann Polytechnic, has been tried and tested successfully in two one-room flats in Queenstown and Bukit Merah since last December.
Lions Befrienders has identified 1,000 needy elderly Singaporeans, living in one-room flats as potential beneficiaries.
The New Paper editor Dominic Nathan said: 'The technology developed by Ngee Ann Polytechnic is key to raising the alarm in an emergency. And if we can help Lions Befrienders build up the network of volunteers, then this could be the perfect marriage of technology and volunteerism.'
Lions Befrienders executive director Goh Boon Han said such a device would help those living alone and who are frail.
A pledge of $1,000 will pay for the installation of the system in one flat.
Project Helping Hands also hopes to get families, neighbourhoods, community groups, schools and businesses to volunteer to adopt a senior citizen living on their own. As volunteers, they have to act on the SMS alert they receive and drop in on the seniors weekly to see how they are doing."

If circumstance decide that they have to live where they are, then at least as the next generation, we should do what we can.

Ministry of Community Development, Youth & Sports

You may be wondering why I would post this at Terroir Arts.  I just felt that even though there are such schemes around, many people do not know about them.  One of those "good to know" moments, but you never know when someone else needs help.

The Travelling Guitar Program

I saw this programme at the Guitars in the Classroom webpage.  It is nice to see more of such initatives taking flight.
The mission of the Traveling Guitar is to fund music education and programmes for those unable to pursue these activities due to limited resources.

They have a two-prong approach for raising funds in support of their mission:
1)  The Traveling Guitar Program:
  1. Each year custom guitars will be built by Ballurio Guitars. These guitars will be built using materials from our sponsor,Northland Forest Products.  Each stage of the build will be photographed and shared via the Traveling Guitar Website.
  2. Once built, the Guitar (the Traveling Guitar) will then spend the next year traveling around the country being play, signed and photographed by our Performing Sponsors.  Each stop will be photographed with photographs displayed on the Traveling Guitar Website.
  3. At the end of the Traveling Guitar's year of travel, the guitar will be prepared and auction.
  4. All (100%) of the proceeds from the on-line auction price will be donated directly to music based charities.
2) Guitar Donation and Auction Program:
  1. All guitars donated, will have the setup and if needed, corrected and will then be auctioned online (eBay).
  2. All (100%) of the proceeds from the auction price will be donated directly to the music based charities.
To contact them about a donation or sponsorship, please send e-mail to donations@travelingguitar.org or sponsors@travelingguitar.org.

EZ Slide Chord

According to the promotional video, the invention was to help a guitarist who lost his finger to continue playing the guitar.  This device frets a movable bar chord shape, and the guitarist would just have to move the device up and down the neck to play various chords, and shift it laterally to get the minor chords.  Check out the promotional video.

I would recommend this device to anyone who has physical impairments which would prevent him from learning the guitar.  You could strum along to plenty of songs with this device, and would be a good tool to help you enjoy music.

But if you can learn the guitar the good old fashion way; hard work, callouses, cramps and lots of practice, do yourself a favor and give this device a miss.

KFC & World Food Programme

KFC - World Food Programme
Forget the PETA saga, KFC (Singapore) is partnering World Food Programme to help feed people when you buy their new Black Pepper Chicken meal.  Although they only contribute $0.20 per meal bought, at least they are trying to do something.  At least it caught my attention, and if you think that KFC should contribute more, please do not hesitate to donate directly to World Food Programme!

Michael Jackson's This Is It - They Don't Care About Us - Dancing Inmates

I came across this video on YouTube.  The description reads:
Filipino, Philippines "Dancing Inmates" from Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC), a maximum security prison, were treated to a visit by Michael Jacksons long-time choreographer Travis Payne and dancers Daniel Celebre and Dres Reid to learn performances from THIS IS IT.

I'm not sure how you feel after watching this, but at least these inmates would have had something interesting to do.  I do see enjoyment in some of their faces.  I do hope that they would feel a sense of fulfillment after this amazing performance, and perhaps inspire them to do something with their lives, no matter where they are.

A Directory of Social Enterprises

Long have I searched for a local directory of various Social Enterprises, something like Yellow Pages perhaps.  I found that Social Enterprise Association has such a directory, seems to be a good start.

I do hope that more can be done for this directory as it seems incomplete and not very useful at the moment.  Hopefully, in time, when anyone needs to get anything done, they will check this directory first.

Directory of Social Enterprises @ SE Association

I'll try to look up some of these enterprises in the directory and perhaps give them more publicity on Terroir Arts.

SE Association: Bridging Social Businesses

http://www.seassociation.sg

This is an amazing website to promote Social Businesses locally.  It is a collaboration between several agencies to both encourage and empower Social Businesses.

They have a membership (http://www.seassociation.sg/membership.html) going on; some of the benefits are,

  • Networking events
  • Members’ rates for events
  • Listing on Membership Directory
  • E-Newsletter feature
  • Business support services
  • Business consultation services
  • Update on industry trends, issues and government related news.
It seems like a lot more features are coming soon on the website, and I feel that its pretty informative right now.  I'll join as a member and see what happens!

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) - Starbucks Coffee

Corporate Social Responsibility has been harped about for some time.  Many companies, especially Multi-National Companies have some form of CSR going on.

What is CSR exactly?  Some say that its a front to try to appeal to the "softer side" of potential clients to purchase their products.  Others say its a legitimate attempt to run a socially responsible business.

Businesses can be run in different ways, but recently there is a trend to look past the monetary gains.  With the focus shifting towards ecological (Climate change, deforestation) and social (unfair labor policies) effects of industrialisation in recent years, there have been changes in the attitudes of people.

Triple Bottom Line; aka People, Planet, Profit; aka The Three Pillars, is a relatively new concept which some businesses are adopting.  I see this as a major step forward for both businesses and humanity.

Starbucks Coffee - Sugar Sachet

At Starbucks Coffee, they are very upfront about the social and environmental causes which they support.  Not sure if there is any local initiatives by Starbucks, however plenty of information is available at: http://www.starbucks.com/responsibility/learn-more/goals-and-progress

So, the next time you have a coffee at Starbucks, the warm fuzzy feeling may not be only due to the caffeine.

"Free" Online Classical Guitar Lessons by Jean-François Delcamp

(Jean-François Delcamp; Professor at the Brest Conservatory of Music, Dance and Drama - France, and founder of the Delcamp Classical Guitar Forums sent this email out early today, which I reproduce entirely.)
Hello everyone,
Starting from Tuesday 9 November, I will be giving online classical guitar lessons on the forum.
My aim is to help isolated amateurs who don't have the opportunity to have a teacher. I want to help them to progress by giving them goals and advice. I hope my forum students will provide help to one another and forge bonds of solidarity among themselves.

My role in these lessons will consist solely of giving you a reasonable goal, advice, and audio and video examples. I will not be commenting on the mp3s and videos that you upload here for the support and advice of other members of the forum, and indeed the teachers on the forum, if they have a little time to devote to you. For my part, I shall unfortunately not have the time available to be able to reply to your questions except very rarely.
I ask help to make these lessons work, and I urgently need one or more coordinators who will manage the groups of students. This teacher, or these teachers, will check first that any student following the lessons fulfills the three requirements which I spell out later. It is enough that the candidate student confirms that he has advertised the lessons among his friends, or indeed in shops/stores or on the net, for his candidacy to be approved.

These lessons are not free: in exchange for my work at your service, I ask 4 things of my future students:
1. I ask you to participate more actively in forum discussions by posting messages more often. I ask you, if possible, to help other members, either by your advice or at least by your encouragement.
2. I ask you to start by publicising my online lessons. This includes publicity on Facebook, Twitter, newsgroups, or by putting up a notice in your newsagent's window, etc. The more students I get, the more you will be able to help one another. You will progress better because you will be able to compare your own work with that of numerous other guitarists who will be playing the same pieces as you, at the same time as you, and under the same time constraints as you. That is why publicity for these online lessons is very important. I repeat, the more of us there are, the richer and more instructive the course will be. Tell your guitarist friends about it too.
You could also put up notices in luthiers' shops, music stores, concert halls, CD stores. You can also send the information to newspapers and magazines, who might perhaps report it.
3. I ask students who want to follow my lessons, as a courtesy, to be registered on the forum with their real forename and surname, or at the very least with their real forename followed by a pseudonym of their choice. To change your username, make a request in the "Your messages to the site administrator" forum.
4. Please do not contact me by private message, but only by posting a message on the forum.

To register for the course, and also to confirm that you have publicised my lessons, use the topic: Registration for forum lessons.

To publicise the lessons, here is some text and a poster that you can send to your friends by email, or put in your blog, or put up in your local baker's window:
Free classical guitar lessons on the internet
Lessons given by Jean-François Delcamp
(Professor at the Brest Conservatory of Music, Dance and Drama - France)
The lessons will begin in November 2010 and finish in June 2011.
These lessons correspond to the first three years at the conservatory
The conditions for registering are available on the forum
http://www.delcamp.us/

Description of the "Online classical guitar lessons by Jean-François Delcamp"
These lessons are open to all those who speak English and who can upload mp3 or video recordings of themselves playing the pieces I shall provide for study, on the forum "Online classical guitar lessons".
Here is how the first lesson will be conducted:
On Tuesday the 9th of November I will create two topics with the titles "D01 - Lesson 1" and "D02 - Lesson 1". I will indicate in my posts there the pieces or exercises to be worked on, I'll give scores in PDF format, or links to scores, with mp3 or video examples.

To register for my online lessons, there are no formalities, you only need to choose which of the 3 levels offered suits you best. A student can change courses during the year, if he realises that he would be more comfortable in a different level. After having confirmed in the "Registration for forum lessons" thread that you have publicised my lessons, all you have to do is upload (in a reply to the lesson thread) your recording of one of the study pieces which I shall provide in order to be considered as a registered student and a participant in the course.
Each student can record several or, preferably, all the pieces and exercises which I shall give out for each lesson. After a week to ten days of work, no more, the student will upload his first recordings in a single post. Participation in one lesson at a particular level is closed as soon as the next lesson at the same level begins. That is to say that each lesson will remain open for your posts and attachments up until the start of the next lesson at the same level. After that date, the previous lesson will be locked and it will no longer be possible to post new messages, though the lesson will remain available in read-only form.
I ask all students to listen to the recordings of each of the other students of the same level, then to give their encouragement, opinions, and if possible their advice. Then the student, after having received that feedback, can post a second series of recordings taking into account the advice and opinions of the other members of the forum. In the absence of a video, photographs of yourself playing the guitar could allow others to give you advice on the best position to adopt for holding your guitar. All advice is welcome, and I am counting on the assistance of all members to help, encourage and advise students and finally to enable them to progress.

I'm asking for your help. I would ask teachers registered on the forum to be kind enough, if they have the time, to give their advice to members occasionally.

Students can proceed as they wish: they can follow the lessons at the level they have chosen from the three levels offered, and they can start and stop when they choose. If you decide to stop, please let the others know by posting a message on the forum.

If you are not yet a member of the "002 posted messages" group, you first need to post two messages on the forum in order to be registered in the group. This can take a while, so please be patient, but if you have not been registered within 24 hours of posting your second message, please contact a moderator.
In the hope of your company in the shared ambition to improve our playing of the classical guitar.
Yours, Jean-François

I believe this is an amazing effort to further the classical guitar community.  As long as anyone have internet access, they can benefit from some serious lessons.  Some of the contributors at Delcamp are seriously high level, and now people of all social and economic standing can have some guitar lessons!

TOMS Shoes: One for One

TOMS Shoes is a social enterprise which PROMISES to donate 1 pair of shoes to the poor for every pair they sell!  They have since donated one million pairs of shoes!

Their shoes (based on the pricings found on their website) is not expensive at all. It is significantly cheaper than many other brands, and they really believe and stand behind their social cause.  Blake Mycoskie, is often found at the front lines in the 3rd world countries giving out these shoes.

When you buy TOMS Shoes, you are not purchasing a pair of shoes.  You are purchasing a belief, a cause.  You are funding at least 2 dreams; Blake's dream to meet footwear needs, and a child's dream to own a pair of shoes.

Blake spoke at the recent Global Leadership Summit, he recalled an incident when a mother was approaching him with tears.  Tears of joy, because for the past 1 year, her 3 children have been sharing 1 pair of shoes and taking turns to go to school.  Thus each child only goes to school once every 3 days.  Now, they go to school everyday in their TOMS Shoes.

5th April 2011, the day without shoes.
Join more than a quarter million people worldwide to experience a day without shoes.  A great conversation starter; when people ask about our shoes, we just say that millions of children around the world have no shoes.  But it doesn't have to be that way, buy a TOMS's and a child will have shoes.

I'll be getting my TOMS Shoes soon.

"If something collapses, it's okay, you can rebuild it again." - Mr Kim Whye Kee

The story of a ex-triad who became grassroots volunteer and sculpture artist in the making.  (Story from The Straits Times, Monday, November 1, 2010, Pg B6.)

Once a triad chief, the 31-year old has been in trouble with the law since 19.  Today he volunteers fervently in Jurong GRC.

"As I lay in bed in prison, I would reflect on what I had done, and the more I reflected, the more I repented."

"I came to a decision: if my past was a disaster to my family and society, the purpose of my present existence is to repent, repay and rebuild."

With much support and encouragement from the people around him, and the Yellow Ribbon Project (http://www.yellowribbon.org.sg/); Mr Kim is now a first-year student pursuing a diploma in fine at at Lasalle Collage of the Arts.

His passion is sculpture, which he wants to use to bring hope to the community that has helped him get back on his feet.  "If something is not straight, you make it straight," drawing a parallel between his art and his redemption.

I feel that his story is such an encouragement to many people.  Its not just what he is doing, but his story and journey will inspire more people from different walks of life to really admire his spirit and determination.  Now as he pursues sculpturing, I believe we can expect greater things, both artistic and socially beneficial.  To take time to seek out the entire article.
